South Carolina Low Country Turkey Hunting Print E-mail

The 2010 spring season turned out better again late season for our turkey hunters as usual. Early on, there was quite a bit of gobbling, but really hard to fool the birds to come in to the calls and decoys. We had some great hunters and callers. Rob Keck was here for the opening, and Bobby Woods, competition caller, and champion this year, who were both also outsmarted by the low country birds. They are a real challenge.  We had callers from Va, and as far away as Oswega, N.Y. It is always exciting to have different callers and call makers in each year the first week or so.  Stan Oullette, Deer Creek Outfitters, Oswega, got his hunters on the most birds this year, and had a great time being a part of our spring turkey hunts. We ended up with 22 birds from 50 hunters, 7 misses, 8 more opportunities where the hunter just did not get the shot off, so oveall we did OK, but left plenty for next year.

Our hunters will again have access to over 9,000 acres of prime turkey woods this coming spring. PVHC hunts the hunts some of the highest producing counties in the state including the number 1 08 harvest county of Bamberg. Properties are expertly managed for maximum turkey population and gobbler numbers. We absolutely DO NOT over harvest our grounds and like our guests to ensure a trophy hunting future by passing on immature gobblers (jakes). We had plenty of long beards for you this year, and want to have plenty of long beards in the future for you as well. We feel that hunters booking a three day hunt that are willing to hunt hard with our expert guides stand an excellent chance of bagging a trophy South Carolina gobbler. Many have multiple opportunities, especially as the latter season comes in and hens go to nesting.

Also, we will again plan to give the option next spring (2011)to our hunters of trying to take a wild hog in the afternoon instead of sitting on chuffa patches. We try not to push the birds in the afternoons because we all know what that does to the birds for the next morning! Again, here at Paradise Valley we use every resource to make your hunt the most enjoyable and successful experience possible.

The Guides

One of the highest priorities of having a great and successful hunt is having the right guide. We pride ourselves in having the best around. Each of them have a great knowledge of turkey hunting and calling, sincerely enjoy what they do, and truly enjoy showing you the best time ever while on a guided turkey hunt. They are very familiar with the properties, have excellent personalities, and have way more calls than they can tote the woods at one time. We are very proud of each of them and consider them part of our family.

This seasons (2010) Turkey Guides: Tom Collins, John Coit, Neal Branan, Stan Ouellette, Bobby Woods (Wood Haven Calls), Jason Peek, Wayne Horton, Kyle Ross (Gobbler Down Calls) , Kevin Kirkpatrick (Wood Haven Calls), Wayne Hendrix (Hendrix Custm Knives), Greg Bowers, Bob Vaughn, Danny Hackney, and Scott.

A turkey Tale from hunter Raymond Archer

Bang, thanks. When I came to you and told you I wanted to make my first Turkey Hunt a complete learning experience you responded with a firm “I know what you want and we can do it”.

Boy did you “do it” and then some.

After my time at Paradise Valley Hunting Club (PVHC), I can sit with experienced turkey hunters and carry my own in the conversation. Don’t get me wrong, as you have said, a turkey hunter will learn something in each hunt.

You say we lucked out with a hunt of a life time, I say you and John Coit orchestrated the hunt so that I had to use lessons learned in the previous days. Plus it was all on film. If asked, and some that I tell without being asked, your first-timers hunt is without a doubt the way to go. Whether it is for oneself or a family member that wants to bag their first turkey or to get in to turkey hunting on the right foot they will not be disappointed at PVHC.

With regards to your camp, what can I say? You have created a home away from home for all hunters, whatever the age. You advertise you cater to families and boy did you demonstrate that to me. The food, the home feeling, that special attention one gets from you, your staff and guides is special. It amazed me how you made me feel like a special guest, all the while, I was a part of the group, a member of your group. I found myself going around turn off light switches as if as I owned the place. You can bet I will be bringing my grandsons/granddaughter there for their first hunt.

Bang, Tom, John Coit, and Dusty Springs; thank you for leading me into a new sport that seems as though it can consume you with challenge and fun. Thanks.

Head to toe camoflauge : Medium to lightweight, mossy oak break up, spring green patterns work excellent. You will need hat, head net, gloves,  pants and shirt in both warm weather and cold weather ( down to high 20's some mornings )
Proper gun : Matte black or fully camoed guns are best. Shiny guns spook our birds! 20,12,and 10 gauge guns are a must. Preferably these guns will be pre-fitted with an extra full turkey choke, sighted and patterned prior to your arrival. We can help with that on your arrival if needed, but prefer you get to know your gun and be ready to shoot turkeys at 20-40 yards. Printable Turkey Target
Shells : All guns have a pet load. We typically get the best performance using # 6 shot winchester xx supremes seem to be a camp favorite. Both 3 and 3.5 inch 12 gauges will work, however, you will notice most of our go to guns are 3.5's. They definitely work very well in the turkey woods. Typically we are looking for a gun that will put 8-12 hits in the vital areas ( brain, spine ) of a turkey at 40 yards.
Calf high boots: You will see most of our guides in calf high waterproof snake boots. We do have venomous reptiles out and about during turkey season. While our encounters with them are few and far between, what isn't is encounters with water. Hunting bottomland habitat in the spring can get wet. A good pair of Rocky or Lacross snake boots serve double duty well. They also tend to have soft flexible soles that help us slip in quietly up to roosted gobblers.
Turkey Vest / Seat : We highly reccomend coming with a vest with an attached stadium style seat or flip down pad. Small turkey stools combined with a pad can make all the difference in your comfort. Some prefer the self supported stadium style seats. The sensible storage along with seating comfort make it a must have. Visit the Bass Pro Shops web site for more helpful information on turkey vests.
Turkey calls : In the afternoons  most of our hunters will sit solo near a chufa plot or other strutting area. This is a great chance to try out a new box call or run an old proven favorite. In the ams our guides may also be quick to ask you to help coax that tom to the gun. Sometimes a new lady, is exactly what the doctor ordered.
Bug Spray / Therma Cell : Therma cells and bug spray are a must. We do cell therma cells and accessories at the lodge if you dont have time to pick one up.
