Bullock County Alabama
January Rut Hunts In The Famed Black Belt
After several years of trying to find the right piece of property in Alabama to do some January Only Rut hunts, we have come up with 2200 acres of land in Alabama's infamous black belt. Situated in Bullock County, Smuteye is just 15 miles south of the well known trophy producing area surrounding Union Springs. My son Tom and I have enjoyed Blackbelt whitetail hunting after our South Carolina season closes on New Years day. We are happy to finally be able to offer our hunters a chance to enjoy Alabama's trophy deer hunting with us.
The Land
The 2200 acres is owned by two ”hands on” farmers who have not allowed the land to be over hunted and shot out, during the 25 years they have owned it. This property consists of agriculture and classic river bottom habitat, and some pasture land with cattle. This year the agriculture areas are planted with 600 acres of corn, which will be reseeded with rye for the January hunts, 400 acres of peanuts, also planted with rye during January The land backs up to the Pea River bottoms which is just a perfect place for bedding and sanctuary that a trophy buck is drawn to.
The food plots will be planted in October with rye, and other cultivars to attract and hold the deer on the property. Corn will be fed during the months of October, November, and December, and we will hunt the stands starting about January 5th. No sooner.
The Hunt
We will only hunt 5 hunters per day for the 3 weeks of hunting and with that plan are hoping our hunters will have opportunities at some really nice bucks. We will be hunting mature bucks with 17” wide outside spreads, or with scorable antlers of 110 minimum Boone and Crockett. We have talked with hunters with long term leases on adjoining properties who have been managing their land for many years. They are excited about our plans on becoming their neighbors, and we to are very pleased to have neighbors who have been managing their properties.
Instead of taking our 2200 acres and putting 40 or 50 stands like some do, we will hunt ten to twelve stands on the entire property. The stands settings typically will be on field edges overlooking feed plots, in edges of drains overlooking food plots or pastures, and a few in the woods. Our aim is to leave a lot of the areas free of hunter traffic, hunter scent, and hunter pressure. Minimizing scent and the unwanted problem of running the deer off to the neighbors. Our scouting trips have assured us with the deer sign, that there are plenty of mature bucks there for our hunters to be successful. We know every hunter will not get a big buck, but no where does that happen with fair chase hunting.
Bag Limits
This hunt will be for one buck with a 17 inch outside or better spread or 110 inches BC and one doe. Additional buck may be taken for $750.00
The hunts will be 3 days only, Thursday evenings through Sunday mornings, and Monday evenings through Thursday mornings. If a group can only hunt during the week, if scheduling allows, we will try to work it out.
Lodging / Meals
Camp consists of a very nice, clean mobile home. We will be serving Country Style Home Cooking like our hunters have come to expect here at our camp in South Carolina.
Rates
This hunt is $1395.00 per person for the three day hunt. Meals and lodging are included of course.
